MONICA FERRERAS DE LA MAZA

by Albertine Kopp

Monica Ferreras de la Maza uses her art to explore the Dominican Republic’s contemporary urban culture and the marginalized youth of Santo Domingo. She considers her work a reflection of her culture, but also strongly autobiographical.

Prolific in painting, drawing, installation and video art, Monica includes whimsical dots, lines, labyrinths and mandalas to share visions of the sea, her island identity and questions about the impact of social class, tradition and consumerism.

"The greatest civilizations have endured because of culture and science”
