Boutique cigarmaker Reinier Lorenzo of HVC Cigars is expanding his Selección No. 1 brand with a new extension called Connecticut, named for its light, Connecticut-seed wrapper grown in Ecuador. Retailers will get to preview the cigars at the PCA trade show in Las Vegas taking place between March 22 and 25. The cigars are expected to start shipping the first week of April.

Beneath the blond wrapper, HVC Selección No. 1 Connecticut is entirely Nicaraguan. The binder was grown in the Jalapa region, while the fillers are a combination of tobaccos from Jalapa and Estelí. According to Lorenzo, the cigars are mild in body but still remain flavorful and have a certain sweetness.

Rolled in Nicaragua, HVC Selección No. 1 was the first brand to be released from the company’s Fabrica de Tabacos HVC S.A. factory, which was built in 2022. The Maduro line (clad in a dark Mexican San Andrés wrapper) shipped later that year and the Natural line (rolled with an Ecuador Habano 1992 cover leaf) was released in 2023.

HVC Selección No. 1 Connecticut will be available in the same three sizes as the other two lines: Esenciales, measuring 5 5/8 inches by 46 ring gauge ($9.00); Short Robusto, 4 1/2 by 52 ($9.60) and Poderosos 6 by 54 ($10.50). All three sizes will ship in white boxes of 20, in contrast to the Maduro line, which comes in boxes that are bright green, and the Natural line, which is packaged in yellow boxes.
